Paleo Brands Inc, a small paleo diet snackfood company was launched four years ago by two friends, NFL player John Welbourn and founder of Del Mar Seafoods,Joe Cappuccio. The two men, neighbors at the time, wanted to provide simple, high quality paleo friendly foods for professional athletes, Crossfitters, and people looking to get healthy---many of whom need and want portable but very healthy convenience foods for busy days and travelling. They wanted to offer foods that build a strong mind and body using 100% natural ingredients, many of them organic or grass-fed. Joe reached out to his friend, Robb Wolf, a New York Times Best Selling paleo book author.
Then in 2012, John realized that many of his customers and friends---CrossFitters, CrossFit Footballers, Power Athletes(TM), and athletes in general, wanted products that didn’t technically qualify as Paleo, but still held important places in their daily deits. Specifically, he wanted to provide the cleanest, most optimally digested whey protein. This led to a change of name. Paleo Brands became Evolve Foods, A few short months later, their company name required another evolution and became what it is today Well Food Company.
They sell grass-fed jerky and steak sticks that are gluten-free grain-free, soy-free, minimally processed and free of added nitrates, MSG, erythorbate, and artificial ingredients. They also make Paleo Beef Jerky Sticks, two Carne Bars made from grass-fed dried beef with added berries or coconut, and two flavors of paleo cookies (Almond-Raisin and Double Chocolate Chip). The cookies are very sweet so if you’re on a low-sugar diet or simply like things that are subtle in sweetness, you might prefer their bars, jerky, and dark chocolate.
I did not get a chance to try their Cranberry Almond Grassfed Whey Protein Bar or their whey protein made from the milk of cows raised and grazed all year round on pastures free of pesticides and chemicals. Their protein powder differs from many on the market because it is minimally processed, high in immune-globins and other sensitive components that are often destroyed by high heat and extensive processing. Their protein powder contains only four ingredients, including stevia as the sweetener. It comes in vanilla and chocolate.
My favorite of the products I tried was the BBQ flavored Paleo Beef Jerky---the sweet tangy flavor of it and the texture. I’ve been making jerky for more than 15 years and have never made BBQ flavor. I also really liked their soy-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, 85% dark chocolate bar and 100% unsweetened baker’s chocolate.
