Are you looking for a healthy, all natural snack that’s wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, naturally sweetened, and even grain–free? I found one. It’s an all natural granola made from clusters of nuts, seeds, berries, other fruits, and honey, and without oats, fillers, or other grains and it meets the other criteria above.
Paleo People Granola is lightly sweetened (I like that). It comes in four flavors: Apple Crisp, Banana Nut, Cacao Nut, and Cappuccino Crunch. It comes in 1 ounce grab and go snack size packages, resealable 5-ounce stand up pouches, and 15 pound bulk bags.
The product’s formulator, Laura Keenan, a lifetime entrepreneur and former Canadian, graduated from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology with a professional Culinary degree, worked for a time in an institutional kitchen and didn’t care for it. She tried other vocations and eventually made her way back to the kitchen, this time, doing her own thing and finding it far more fun than what she experienced fresh out of culinary school.
As a previous Crossfit Affiliate, whose members advocate eating a diet based on the foodways of hunter gatherers and popularized by Dr. Loren Cordain, PhD, Laura knows about the importance of using quality ingredients in as natural a state as possible. Her first line of products, the All Natural Granola, are based on ingredients non-industrialized native (or paleo) people could gather: nuts, seeds, berries, other fruits, and spices, seasoned with a hint of honey. Laura aims to serve the needs of the ever growing gluten-free population as well as those who, for a variety of reasons, choose to omit grains from their diets. She wanted to created something that was delicious, nutrient dense, portable, flavorful, and satisfying and she did.
Laura launched her current company, Paleo People, in March of 2010. Prior to that she tested the prototypes for her current products on in her Crossfit Facility. Some of you may know her products by their previous name: Paleo Women Snacks & Granolas. From there she tweaked and tested her products, which are currently available in more than 70 stores and distributed by Nature’s Best. If your local natural foods stores don’t carry her products, you can ask them if buy from this distributor or can special order from them. Besides the US, her products are also sold in Canada and Australia.
Besides eating them out of your hand as a snack or dessert, you can sprinkle them over fresh, raw or poached fruit, yogurt, ice cream, non-dairy frozen desserts (like my coconut milk-based Ice Dream), green salads, or pour them into a bowl and top with plain almond, cashew, or lite coconut milk for a seriously good cereal alternative.
Her products have been well received by CrossFitters, fitness lovers, people with celiac disease, vegetarians, vegans, omnivores, hikers, bicyclists, golfers, tennis players, soccer players, kids, and others who want satisfying, scrumptious snacks made from real foods. They would be great for traveling, back packing, and taking to the office.
A 1-ounce snack package of Apple Crisp flavor contains 160 calories, 12 grams of fat, 11 grams of carbohydrate (minus 2 grams fiber), 8 grams of sugar, and 3 grams of protein. Other flavors vary slightly by approximately 1 gram more or less of fat, carbohydrate, or protein. The Banana Nut flavor contains a small amount of sugar (found in the dried cranberries) but otherwise honey is the only sweetener in the granolas. I like that she uses coconut oil rather than refined, polyunsaturated oils used in most packaged foods. You can learn more about the nutrition details by clicking here.
One ounce snack packs of Paleo People Granola cost .99 cents and the 5-ounce bags cost $4.25 (U.S. prices). You can order a single flavor or a variety pack of 4, 8, or 12 packages of granola. If you like (or love) Paleo People Granola you can order it in bulk packages. You’ll receive a big discount if you own or work in a retail outlet or you are a CrossFit Affiliates, belong to the military, law enforcement, are a firefighter, or belong to some other related group and plan to purchase in bulk.
